SUMMARY:Music Box Films Movie Night: Frantz
DESCRIPTION:Set in Germany and France in the immediate aftermath of the First World War\, (1914-1918)\, Frantz recalls the mourning period that follows great national tragedies as seen through the eyes of the war’s “lost generation”: Anna (21 year-old Paula Beer in a breakthrough performance)\, a bereft young German woman whose fiancé\, Frantz\, was killed during trench warfare\, and Adrien (Pierre Niney\, Yves Saint Laurent)\, a French veteran of the war who shows up mysteriously in her town\, placing flowers on Frantz’s grave. Adrien’s presence is met with resistance by the small community still reeling from Germany’s defeat\, yet Anna gradually gets closer to the handsome and melancholy young man\, as she learns of his deep friendship with Frantz\, conjured up in evocative flashbacks. What follows is a surprising exploration of how Ozon’s characters’ wrestle with their conflicting feelings – survivor’s guilt\, anger at one’s losses\, the overriding desire for happiness despite everything that has come before\, and the longing for sexual\, romantic and familial attachments. Ozon drew his inspiration from a post-WWI play by Maurice Rostand that inspired the 1932 film adaption by Ernst Lubitsch under the title Broken Lullaby. \nLINK TO TRAILER: Frantz – International Films – Independent Films | Music Box Films \nReserve Now

SUMMARY:Music Box Films Movie Night: Meru
DESCRIPTION:In the high-stakes pursuit of big-wall climbing\, the Shark’s Fin on Mount Meru may be the ultimate prize. Sitting 21\,000 feet above the sacred Ganges River in Northern India\, the mountain’s perversely stacked obstacles make it both a nightmare and an irresistible calling for some of the world’s toughest climbers. In October 2008\, renowned alpinists Conrad Anker\, Jimmy Chin and Renan Ozturk arrived in India to tackle Meru. Their planned seven-day trip quickly devolved into a 20-day odyssey in sub-zero temperatures with depleting food rations. Within 100 meters of the elusive summit\, their journey – like all previous attempts – fell short of the goal. Heartbroken and defeated\, the trio returned to their everyday lives\, where the siren song of Meru continued to beckon. By September 2011\, Anker had convinced his team to reunite and undertake the Shark’s Fin once more\, under even more extraordinary circumstances. Meru is the story of that journey\, an expedition through nature’s harshest elements and one’s complicated inner demons\, and ultimately on to impossible new heights. \nLINK TO TRAILER: Meru – International Films – Independent Films | Music Box Films \nReserve Now

SUMMARY:Music Box Films Movie Night: Back to Burgundy
DESCRIPTION:Three siblings reunite at their home in picturesque Burgundy to save the family vineyard in this tender tale of a new generation finding its own unique blend from acclaimed director Cédric Klapisch (L’Auberge Espagnole). Jean (Pio Marmaï)\, the black sheep of the family\, unexpectedly returns home from a decade abroad to reconnect with his hospitalized father. He’s welcomed by his strong-willed sister\, Juliette (Ana Girardot)\, who took over the reins of the vineyard after their father fell ill\, and Jeremie (François Civil)\, the youngest of the three who has recently married into one of the region’s more prestigious wine families. Their father passes shortly after Jean’s return\, leaving them with the estate and a looming inheritance tax of half a million dollars. As four seasons and two harvests go by\, Jean\, Juliette\, and Jeremie have to learn to reinvent their relationship and trust in each other as they work to preserve the land that ties them together. \nLINK TO TRAILER: Back to Burgundy – International Films – Independent Films | Music Box Films \nReserve Now

SUMMARY:Music Box Films Movie Night: Writing with Fire

The women of Khabar Lahariya (‘Waves of News’)\, all from the Dalit (“untouchables”) caste\, prepare to transition the newspaper from print to digital even though many of their reporters don’t have access to electricity at home. Armed with smartphones\, Chief Reporter Meera and her team of investigative journalists confront some of India’s biggest issues – exposing the relentless discrimination against women and amplifying the voices of those who suffer from the oppressive caste system.
