Bound by common tragic family histories (the Algerian War and Holocaust under Vichy)\, the duo improbably falls in love. SUMMARY:Music Box Films Movie Night: The Conquest
DESCRIPTION:In The Conquest\, Denis Podalydès delivers a witty yet commanding portrayal of Nicolas Sarkozy and his rise to the French presidency through the lens of his unraveling marriage to then-wife Cecilia (Florence Pernel). Never one to disguise his ambition\, the film’s Sarkozy curries favor with predecessor Jacques Chirac (Bernard Le Coq) and spars gamely with glib rival Dominique de Villepin (Samuel Labarthe). This lampoon depicts the future president of France as a bold and unashamed virtuoso of political combat\, whose inattention to his disintegrating domestic partnership emerges as his chief vulnerability. With leads brilliantly etching sharp characterizations of living politicians\, director Xavier Durringer need never veer too far from reality\, even while deploying fictional embellishments and a larger-than-life sense of humor that—with Nicola Piovani’s buoyant score—giddily evoke a circus-like atmosphere. \nLINK TO TRAILER: The Conquest – International Films – Independent Films | Music Box Films \nReserve Now

SUMMARY:Music Box Films Movie Night: Le Week-end
DESCRIPTION:Academy Award winner Jim Broadbent (IRIS\, TOPSY-TURVY\, ANOTHER YEAR) and Lindsay Duncan (ABOUT TIME\, ALICE IN WONDERLAND\, MANSFIELD PARK) give exquisite performances as Nick and Meg\, a long-married British couple revisiting Paris for the first time since their honeymoon in an attempt to rekindle their relationship. During a two-day escapade\, diffident\, wistful Nick and demanding\, take-charge Meg careen from harmony to disharmony to resignation and back again as they take stock of half a lifetime of deep tenderness — and even deeper regret. A surprise invitation from Nick’s old friend Morgan (Jeff Goldblum)\, an amusingly eccentric American academic with a fancy Parisian address\, soon leads them to an unexpectedly hopeful vision of what their love and marriage might still become. This magically buoyant\, bittersweet romantic comedy\, starring two of Britain’s national treasures\, follows VENUS\, THE MOTHER and THE BUDDHA OF SUBURBIA as a notable salute to the collaborative filmmaking journey of screenwriter Hanif Kureishi and director Roger Michell. \nLINK TO TRAILER: Le Week-End – International Films – Independent Films | Music Box Films \nReserve Now

SUMMARY:Music Box Films Movie Night: Meru
DESCRIPTION:In the high-stakes pursuit of big-wall climbing\, the Shark’s Fin on Mount Meru may be the ultimate prize. Sitting 21\,000 feet above the sacred Ganges River in Northern India\, the mountain’s perversely stacked obstacles make it both a nightmare and an irresistible calling for some of the world’s toughest climbers. In October 2008\, renowned alpinists Conrad Anker\, Jimmy Chin and Renan Ozturk arrived in India to tackle Meru. Their planned seven-day trip quickly devolved into a 20-day odyssey in sub-zero temperatures with depleting food rations. Within 100 meters of the elusive summit\, their journey – like all previous attempts – fell short of the goal. Heartbroken and defeated\, the trio returned to their everyday lives\, where the siren song of Meru continued to beckon. By September 2011\, Anker had convinced his team to reunite and undertake the Shark’s Fin once more\, under even more extraordinary circumstances. Meru is the story of that journey\, an expedition through nature’s harshest elements and one’s complicated inner demons\, and ultimately on to impossible new heights. \nLINK TO TRAILER: Meru – International Films – Independent Films | Music Box Films \nReserve Now

SUMMARY:Music Box Films Movie Night: Frantz
DESCRIPTION:Set in Germany and France in the immediate aftermath of the First World War\, (1914-1918)\, Frantz recalls the mourning period that follows great national tragedies as seen through the eyes of the war’s “lost generation”: Anna (21 year-old Paula Beer in a breakthrough performance)\, a bereft young German woman whose fiancé\, Frantz\, was killed during trench warfare\, and Adrien (Pierre Niney\, Yves Saint Laurent)\, a French veteran of the war who shows up mysteriously in her town\, placing flowers on Frantz’s grave. Adrien’s presence is met with resistance by the small community still reeling from Germany’s defeat\, yet Anna gradually gets closer to the handsome and melancholy young man\, as she learns of his deep friendship with Frantz\, conjured up in evocative flashbacks. What follows is a surprising exploration of how Ozon’s characters’ wrestle with their conflicting feelings – survivor’s guilt\, anger at one’s losses\, the overriding desire for happiness despite everything that has come before\, and the longing for sexual\, romantic and familial attachments. Ozon drew his inspiration from a post-WWI play by Maurice Rostand that inspired the 1932 film adaption by Ernst Lubitsch under the title Broken Lullaby. \nLINK TO TRAILER: Frantz – International Films – Independent Films | Music Box Films \nReserve Now

DESCRIPTION:When Alexis (Félix Lefebvre) capsizes off the coast of Normandy\, David (Benjamin Voisin) comes to the rescue and soon opens the younger boy’s eyes to a new horizon of friendship\, art\, and sexual bliss.
