SUMMARY:Music Box Films Movie Night: Frantz
DESCRIPTION:Set in Germany and France in the immediate aftermath of the First World War\, (1914-1918)\, Frantz recalls the mourning period that follows great national tragedies as seen through the eyes of the war’s “lost generation”: Anna (21 year-old Paula Beer in a breakthrough performance)\, a bereft young German woman whose fiancé\, Frantz\, was killed during trench warfare\, and Adrien (Pierre Niney\, Yves Saint Laurent)\, a French veteran of the war who shows up mysteriously in her town\, placing flowers on Frantz’s grave. Adrien’s presence is met with resistance by the small community still reeling from Germany’s defeat\, yet Anna gradually gets closer to the handsome and melancholy young man\, as she learns of his deep friendship with Frantz\, conjured up in evocative flashbacks. What follows is a surprising exploration of how Ozon’s characters’ wrestle with their conflicting feelings – survivor’s guilt\, anger at one’s losses\, the overriding desire for happiness despite everything that has come before\, and the longing for sexual\, romantic and familial attachments. Ozon drew his inspiration from a post-WWI play by Maurice Rostand that inspired the 1932 film adaption by Ernst Lubitsch under the title Broken Lullaby. \nLINK TO TRAILER: Frantz – International Films – Independent Films | Music Box Films \nReserve Now

SUMMARY:Live Music with Anna P.S.
DESCRIPTION:Indie folk musician Anna p.s. conveys a sense of weariness throughout her simple but resonant songs\, but it’s a weariness that keeps a blanket of hope tucked up under its chin\, even as the rain keeps falling outside the windows. Grace always lurks around the corner on tunes that layer delicate vulnerability over the hearty stock of this songwriter’s spirit. With technical acumen acquired during an early career as an audio engineer and a humble but confident stage presence groomed as a founding member of indie roots rock band Shiny Shiny Black\, Anna stepped out as a solo musician in 2014. She’s been on the road intermittently ever since\, and her debut LP Umbrella released in July 2016\, showcasing her signature sonic blend of melancholy\, hope\, and resilience.

SUMMARY:Music Box Films Movie Night: Meru
DESCRIPTION:In the high-stakes pursuit of big-wall climbing\, the Shark’s Fin on Mount Meru may be the ultimate prize. Sitting 21\,000 feet above the sacred Ganges River in Northern India\, the mountain’s perversely stacked obstacles make it both a nightmare and an irresistible calling for some of the world’s toughest climbers. In October 2008\, renowned alpinists Conrad Anker\, Jimmy Chin and Renan Ozturk arrived in India to tackle Meru. Their planned seven-day trip quickly devolved into a 20-day odyssey in sub-zero temperatures with depleting food rations. Within 100 meters of the elusive summit\, their journey – like all previous attempts – fell short of the goal. Heartbroken and defeated\, the trio returned to their everyday lives\, where the siren song of Meru continued to beckon. By September 2011\, Anker had convinced his team to reunite and undertake the Shark’s Fin once more\, under even more extraordinary circumstances. Meru is the story of that journey\, an expedition through nature’s harshest elements and one’s complicated inner demons\, and ultimately on to impossible new heights. \nLINK TO TRAILER: Meru – International Films – Independent Films | Music Box Films \nReserve Now
